Melissa Spears shared a portrait of Andy Partridge she drew some time around December May 29 Fuzzy Warbles reviewed:
He uses humor and sarcasm to satirize the notion that one supports the country by purchasing certain products. His ultimate argument is that retail and commercials should not have a relationship for it encourages a false sense of patriotism.
Throughout the entire essay Barry concentrates on humor and its use in establishing the satire of the text. He reasons that if beer could endorse patriotism then products like laxatives and deodorant could as well. His humor produces the mockery of commercials sponsoring patriotism and establishes the absurdity of joining them together.
Barry incorporates an anecdote by narrating a story of an unfortunate accident that happened to him that was created by beer.
This anecdote shows the reality of the effects of beer, the commercial claims when men get together under the influence of the brand of beer being endorsed they can build a house efficiently and in a pro-American style.
Barry says that in reality accidents would occur where alcohol induced ideas would cause windows and objects to be broken which actually happened to him.
Barry speculates that the walls of the house would be more likely to fall onto someones car than stay together and form a house.
This speculation and anecdote shows the ridiculousness of making beer a symbol of patriotism. Instead of being a symbol of American values, beer in actuality only creates problems and broken windows. Barry points out the falseness of the patriotism incorporated into beer commercials, for it only emphasizes masculinity.
This further proves that these commercials are not at all endorsing real American values.
Overall Dave Barry satirizes retail patriotism such as beer commercials through his use of sarcasm and humor to point out the error of products and commercials disguising themselves as patriotic. By mocking this relationship between patriotism and materialism he is arguing the need for the separation between the two and instead having American values not polluted by products like beer.A memoir of the trip to New York City for the Sam Rivers, Dave Holland, and Barry Altschul concert at Columbia University's Miller Theatre, May 25th, Red, White, and Beer: A Criticism of America’s ‘Retail Patriotism’ ‘Red, White, and Beer’ is a short two and a half page essay written by Dave Barry.
